Super Little Book for Rockhounds!
I picked this book up and couldn't put it down. I've always got a rock in my pocket - it seems like a natural thing. This book enlightens one as to what the meaning is of our natural attraction to stones. It is a metaphysical type of book that an average reader can understand and learn from. It offers food for thought to all the rock-hounds of the world.

Liturgy-Sound of Stones: English - Armenian
Published in Paperback by Hamazkayin Armenina Educational (March, 1998)
Author: Herand M. Markarian
Average review score:

An excellent read, a journey through the Armenian past
This book takes you on a journey through present-day Turkey, formerly Armenia. Markarian documents existing Armenian architecture and churches during his journey through a country which denies the former presence of Christian Armenians on their historic lands.

In this daring book, Markarian documents the truth. He provides his readers with a brief history of each city he travels to, includes photographs of the ancient ruins of the Armenian churches and homes, and adds a splash of color by letting us enter his thoughts through poetry.

I found myself brought to tears as I read about Markarian travelling to the city where his father was raised, searching for the church where his father was an altar boy, only to find one stone with a cross engraved on it in a field where the church used to stand. I highly recommend this book to any reader who is interested in uncovering the truth about the Armenian past.

Living Stones Pilgrimage: With the Christians of the Holy Land
Published in Paperback by Univ of Notre Dame Pr (January, 1999)
Authors: Alison Hilliard, Jane Betty, and Betty Jane Bailey
Average review score:

The guide to Christian travel in and around Jerusalem.
Many travel guides can tell you locations and the history of the monuments around Jerusalem. But this one tells you the histories of the various Christian communities who worship there. Its focus is not architecture but worship. It provides insights into their traditions as well. Most importantly perhaps, it provides contact information and tells the schedules of worship services.

The authors do not assume any prior theological or historical knowledge; everything is simple and straightforward. In the back of the book is a map of central Jerusalem on which most of the monuments can be located. There is a brief, helpful section on Bethlehem and Nazareth as well.

In short, most travel guides are not written for Christian worshippers, but this one is. This books purpose is to enable Christian travellers to find communities, learn about them, and join with them in worship. If you want that experience to be part of your trip to Jerusalem and Israel, this is exactly the book you need.

Life changing, a beacon of hope, profound truths and wisdom
This book is a wonderful testimony to troubled youths to help keep them from going down a road they don't want to be on. And if they have already gone down that road, it is a beacon for finding Jesus Christ and their way out. It is full of profound truths and experiential wisdom and has the potential to change lives. Even if you're not going down that road, everyday life has it's share of troubles and can beat you down to a place where you just want to give up. This book can help you too. Especially the Helps chapters in the last part of the book and the extensive resource list at the end. To read about someone having the same problems you do and seeing that they came through it gives you hope and the desire to go on. Don't quit! Thanks Dave for sharing your life with us. God bless you!

Louisiana's Loss, Mississippi's Gain; the history of Hancock County, Mississippi: From the Stone Age to the Space Age
Published in Hardcover by Brunswick Pub Co (01 July, 1999)
Authors: Robert G. Scharff and Stephen E. Ambrose
Average review score:

This book makes history come alive!
This historical volume has been extremely well-researched, well-documented, and well-written. It is an excellent resource for history aficionados, especially those with a focus on Mississippi and Louisiana. It describes the people, places, and events that shaped Hancock County, Mississippi -- on the Gulf Coast -- from prehistoric times to the present.

There are countless interesting (and very descriptive) stories contained in the book; the author's writing style makes you feel like you were there -- this isn't just a "dry" history book. The people and places really come alive through the well-chosen words.

After reading the book and then visiting Mississippi and Hancock County for the first time, I felt like I was already in familiar territory!

Lovable Furry Old Grover's Resting Places
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Jon Stone
Average review score:

A Winner!
My daughter loves this book! Grover shows your child 'resting places' for different body parts (thumb, hands, nose, etc) and invites you child to try them. Our daughter learned her body parts this way, but still wants to read the Grover book. Fun and educational, this was one of the best gifts my daughter received on her first Birthday. It is hard to find books that she really likes, this one is a total winner.

Lucy Stone: Speaking Out for Equality
Published in Paperback by Rutgers University Press (December, 1992)
Author: Andrea Moore Kerr
Average review score:

Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton get more press...
...but they and the entire women's rights movement owe a great deal to Lucy Stone (1818-1893). This extensive biography profiles the woman who makes her way from a farm in central Massachusetts to Oberlin College (the only institution admitting women and blacks at the time), and then on to the lecture circuit and the issues of anti-slavery and suffrage. A fiercely-independent woman who vows never to marry, she fends off and is simultaneously intrigued by romantic advances made to her by Henry Blackwell, the Ralph Kramden of his day. They marry in 1855. Lucy continues her speaking tours, eventually takes care of daughter Alice, publishes the Women's Journal, and finances all of Henry's ill-fated get-rich-quick schemes. Intertwined with the details of her personal life are her relationships with the key people in both movements (Anthony, Stanton, Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison) and the splits with leaders of both. Thanks to many pieces of archived correspondence, we can know the reasons for the rift among suffrage leaders, the division into separate organizations, and their reunion many years later. A fascinating must-read for feminists of all dimensions.
